We left the house after morning breakfast snack to run to Target to pick up a couple items. Not fun, but from there, we headed downtown for a classic car show. It was sunny and in the low 70s so it was a gorgeous day to walk outside without a stroller. There were 6 blocks closed off from traffic lined on both sides with all kinds of classic cars. Even some of the cross streets had cars on them, too. Mostly cool American cars, but at least one block was all European. We ran into a friend of Lew's from work who owns a French car. Actually, we got to see him drive it in. He bought it on ebay, without even seeing it and had it shipped across the USA.
So, I enjoyed the cars. Lew enjoyed the cars. And that made us 50/50 for the event. Yup, that's right, Carl & Gretchen didn't care so much for shiny sparkly old cars that they couldn't touch. But, after walking around the cars, we headed one block closer to the river for the weekly Farmer's Market. Gretchen had her heart set on a yellow pepper. We didn't find any peppers, actually. But, the local berry farm had gorgeous berries for $3. Lew & Gretchen bought some while Carl & I checked out the river and a nearby bench. Of course, Gretchen was hungry and wanted a berry right then - no big deal. She downed one. And another. And another.... so, after about 3 berries, Lew caught on that she as eating them whole - green leafy top and all! Well, it wasn't too hard to catch on - she flat out admitted it. "I am eating the green part!" He at least pulled the leaves off the next couple she ate.
We left the Farmer's Market and headed home for lunch and what I knew was going to be a great nap since we had just walked all over the place in the fresh air. Lunch was good, nap started easily - but alas, it ended early. Only an hour! Now, Gretchen was whiny and miserable. So, of course - I sent her outside to find Daddy. Carl & I joined them and the kids rode tricycles in the driveway for a while. Then we decided to head down to the beach playground since we were up so early. So, we ate snack in the car on the way there - portable Fig Newtons and a cereal bar. There were a few other kids about the same age (a 4 yr old boy who liked talking to Carl and being chased. There was also a family with 4 kids there - 2 older girls, and the 2 younger kids seemed to be twins. They had a ton of extra energy - all 4 of them - and it was a very good investment of their parents' time to go to the playground before dinner hour). Carl loves chasing other kids to play so he was happy. Gretchen loves climbing on everything, so she was happy, too! And then - they discovered that Lew would lift the way up high to get up to the tall slide. Probably a big mistake on his part. He must have lifted them over his head 5000 times before we managed to steer them to another activity. The tall slide has 3 shoots to choose from that are all next to each other. 2 have built in bumps, but the middle one is pretty straight down. I really think there is a spot where their butter beans leave the slide for a bit. It isn't crazy high - as I said, Lew could lift them to the platform, but high enough for a 3 year old to have a blast! It took maybe 3 times before Carl tried the middle steep slide. After that, he only used that one. I can't believe he didn't get the hiccups with all his laughing!
We eventually lured them to the car with the promise of water. Before heading home, we decided to go for more sand and go walk on the beach. Gretchen loved picking up shells because she had pockets in her pants so she was able to bring them home. And Carl stopped to squish the sand between his hands with me for a little bit. He mostly enjoys just walking along and watching the surf. Who doesn't??
Then we stopped for dinner and then spotted the fire on the drive home. And that concludes our fun filled, action packed Saturday! How would you like to see some car show pics? Gretchen is by Lew's friend's French car. (I can't seem to get the spacing right to put the words on top of the picture today.)
