They cost me money.
I don't work while the kids are at school. (well, let me get all Stay At Home Mom defensive... I don't work a job where someone cuts me a paycheck while the kids are at school.) So, this gives me the luxury of shopping alone during the morning hours. When even Walmart has check out lanes wide open and clerks standing still waiting for me to waltz up to them!
It is also when the elderly shoppers are out in higher ratios than you will find them on say, a Saturday afternoon. They are a very easy group to shop around. For the most part. They smile and sometimes say 'good morning'. Today, I spoke for several minutes with an old lady with a thick German accent all about Nutella and peanut butter.
But, they cost me money. They are generally walking slower than I would cruise through the aisles. So, I am often trapped behind them, having to keep their pace, not mine. That's when it happens. I start looking around at the shelves and impulse buying. I stopped at Walmart yesterday morning with a very short list of items and I left there having given Walmart $89. I wasn't even aware of it until I hit the check out line, too.

2012 pumpkins on the beach!
Yesterday, the kids had no school so we used the day to relax and recharge after our busy, stressful weekend. We were outside playing before 9:00. We decided to call and see if Gretchen could get a haircut right away and they had room for us about an hour later. Cool. Her baseball hat and batting helmet have been making her hair be in her face way too much. She hates that - and she dislikes long hair. Michelle gave her a great haircut and even painted her nails hot pink.
We tried to meet Lew for lunch, but the King of His Cell Phone did not get our requests until after 1:00pm. So, we enjoyed lunch out alone together. Mmmm... Frosty's. When we got home, the kids took a short nap because we knew we wanted to go to the beach as soon as Daddy got home. We should have met him at the beach - by the time he got home and we got there, the golden sunlight was almost gone. Oh well, the sand was still fine for making sand castles. We decided that this year we'd do something different and not just roll pumpkins in the water. While it is fun to play in the waves, we wanted a change. The kids even wore bathing suits, not fall clothes.

So, we worked on sand castles and decorated the village with pumpkins. Of course, Carl has his beach car in the bucket - so you will see the roadways as well.
It was a beautiful night. The water is still about 80* and was so nice. We stayed until after 7pm. No one wants to cook after being on the beach and building sand castles - so we pulled into Subway on the drive home and the kids got dinner... and leftovers for lunch today. :-)

a bunch of stuff from last week
Daisy Girl Scouts started. She loved it. I didn't get to see much of what they did because Carl & I hung out with the other moms who had siblings along, too. But, they did end with a Friendship Squeeze Circle. I hope they learn "Make New Friends" to sing, too. They only meet every other week so Gretchen & I are actually going to a special Girl Scout event at our children's museum this coming week. It's a Friday night event and I think she will earn her first badge doing it! We spend so much time at the children's museum that they know the kids very well. Mary Ellen was so excited to hear Gretchen has joined Daisies! I think they do these even programs a couple times a year. You do not have to go with your whole troop which was nice since it was not mentioned at all at the last meeting. The girls won't meet again until after this event, so I am glad we knew about it. We have a local magazine that has The Best monthly events calendar. That's where I learn about almost everything we do for fun.
Really bad photo... I had no flash and the other pictures came out much blurrier. But, you can see that they did a craft project to make name tags. She loved it! We put on her daisy Life Is Good shirt... and not one person noticed. Bummer. We'll order her Daisy uniform soon. I did buy Carl's Cub Scout uniform already. GS uniforms are totally optional. Cub Scout uniforms are 100% required. His cost me $109!!!!! Anyway, I'll have picture of that once Scouts starts up for him.
Tuesday was our school night at a local mini golf and play area. You get a nice deal on 2 activities and our school gets 50% of what they take in! The kids love playing mini golf there. They do not know it but we are going to buy season passes to the water park for next summer. If you buy in October, you get a big discount, but you also will be able to do 1 event every Sunday from October to March. So, we can play mini golf there all winter. Or ride the go-karts. Or climb the rock wall. Or play in the special indoor play area for kids 8 and under. Honestly, if we take advantage of those things even only 2x per month, we will have paid for the water park passes before they even turn on the hoses next summer.
Our favorite local toy store gets the best costumes! You have seen many photos from this place. Well, last spring when The Lorax movie came out, they did a special Lorax event but the costume wasn't available. So, they thought it was so cool, they booked it back then for their anniversary in September. They are celebrating 17 years in town... making their anniversary the same as our wedding anniversary.

I had a phlebotomy on Wednesday morning. Holy cow was that a mess! Since my last visit, the cancer center had been bought out by the hospital and somehow I fell through the cracks. So, I arrive and they leave me sitting for an hour before anyone tells me I cannot be seen there. Well, first - they drew blood. So, of course, my first question was, "Will insurance pay for those labs?" Well, they had not run them - so they handed me my vial of blood and sent me over to my real doctor's office. Yup. Driving around with my own blood in a little plastic tube. Classy, eh? So, my dr decided I could also become a patient at the oncology department and they'd sort of share me... oh, I'm sure insurance will just love this theory!!! Back to oncology with my blood.See a PA I didn't like. and wait wait wait. Then, once I sat in the phlebotomy chair - the blood draw took literally 10 minutes. So, 4 hours in oncology for 10 minutes of excitement. Believe it or not my BP was only 123/78!!!!!! Amazing!!! AND... they checked my ferritin before the phlebotomy and it was 6! 6 before they took a unit of blood out. That explains why I am so tired this weekend. That and the other stuff and stress.
I had a camera club meeting Thursday (while the kids had their baseball game. The meeting was a pot luck supper... yummy! I brought pumpkin pie bars as well as those creme de menthe brownies. drool away!) and while there, a friend said her TV station was putting on a safety fair on Saturday morning. Well, anyone who knows anything about Carl knows how much he loves sitting in vehicles. Those safety events always have various EMS personnel and their vehicles. So, we were there right at 9 when that started. We had to leave about 9:50 to get to bowling.
He loves to sit in the trucks. Not in the big firetruck - no in the pick-up trucks that the firemen drive there. Actually, this Ford F350 (do NOT call it by the wrong name around Carl if you know what is good for you) is their Brush Fire Truck. The firemen were so nice to him. They all told him someday he could drive this truck. Then, he sat in a police car. The officer told him maybe some day he'd be driving this car. All the EMS people are fighting for his talents!
I asked Carl to make a face just like Sheldon is making. So - what do you think???
After bowling, we skipped the safety even that Costco was sponsoring because we had a severe meltdown at bowling and needed a short nap before we headed out to a classmate's birthday party at the aquarium. It was a great party venue. They have a birthday party room. the kids gathered and first thing on the agenda was a craft. They all painted rubber fish and then stamped them onto a tee shirt. Everyone was so into painting and the aquarium worker really did a great job helping everyone make a beautiful keepsake. Once hands were washed and the shirts were set aside drying, she brought out reptiles for the kids to see and touch. A beautiful box turtle, a pretty corn snake and a really cute baby alligator! I didn't bring my camera, but Lew snapped a couple phone shots for you.

I grabbed some hand sanitizer (they wanted us to not give our germs to the little guy) and got to feel him, too. How often do you get to do that? It was very cool! Later in the aquarium's touch tank, I got to touch a shark, too.
Next of course, was cake. Mmm... cake. After the party, we got to hang out in the aquarium and also play outside on their new playground and Shark Teeth digging area until they closed. From there, we headed out to dinner for our anniversary. We thought we'd try a new Chinese buffet. I don't think we have eaten in a Chinese buffet since we left NY. It wasn't all that good, but Carl absolutely loved it once he got past being upset that they didn't have any milk for him.
We skipped baseball practice Saturday evening, but had it on Sunday morning. There were lingering effects of yesterday's meltdown creeping in. It was not a good practice for the boy, but Gretchen got an amazing hit!!! Popped way up and went all the way to the outfield!
No school tomorrow due to a teacher's workday. I have absolutely nothing planned.

autumn athletes
The calendar still says it is summer. So does the thermometer. But, sport schedules tell us that fall is here. The kids are keeping very busy staying fit.
On Mondays, we stay after school and they participate in the Running Club. They are logging in one mile per week for the next 25 weeks. Then, in March, the whole school holds a race day with a 5K and a 10K for older kids and adults and the completion of the marathon that the kids will have been running all year long. No photos... yet.
On Saturday mornings, they have joined a bowling league. Two adults are helping 10 kids over 4 alleys. It's instructional, but Ronnie did tell us the first day, "We aren't going to make your kids pro bowlers. We are here to have fun!" They have been teamed up with another little boy who is 7 and in second grade. He is really cute and pretty serious about bowling. Carl can get a little goofy at times, but if you slow him down, he does really well. They are playing a '7 and up no-tap' which means, if on the first ball, they knock down 7 or more pins.... it counts as a strike. Pair that with the bumpers and the kids have been doing really well. So far, Gretchen has a 113 average and Carl has a 115. There are 2 little girls who are maybe 3 years old. They are so tiny! "A" picks the ball up and it almost knocks her over. I think I have a picture of her bowling next to one of the kids. I'll put it up if I do.
The league is only 7 weeks long, but I am hoping they will want to continue. They are both having fun and doing well following directions. *note* The 2 cutest pictures of Carl happen to be incorrect. He bowls properly 90% of the time, it just happened that the 2 best shots I grabbed have him with his right leg forward. So, fear not - he knows to put his left foot forward to bowl.

The other workout they are getting is out on the baseball field. They are playing Fall Ball in the same organization that they played tee ball last spring. They don't play tee ball in the fall, so we are on a machine pitch team for kids 8 and under. They have kids on the team who have been playing baseball for a couple years. Carl and Gretchen don't have the skills these other kids have. But, we are making progress... or the coaches are making progress. Practice #1: Coach hit Carl in the head with a baseball. Practice #2: a kid hit Carl in the chest from about 10' away with a baseball. Knocked him over and he cried. Practice #3: different coach hit Carl in the back with a baseball. He didn't cry, but he rubbed it for a few minutes. Practice #4: Carl does not get hit with a baseball!!!! See??? Progress!!!
I don't think we will be playing in the spring. They will be too old for tee ball and another father told us that the spring baseball is highly competitive. He said "all the good athletes are playing football right now, too"... so, apparently, these are even considered the "good athletes". Pretty funny for an 8 and under league, huh? Oh, our practices are Weds pm from 7:30 - 8:30 pm, Sat at 5 pm and Sunday at 11 am. Mostly an hour. We learned that in the spring they are 2 hour practices, too. Ugh. We live about 20 minutes away, so for a practice to end at 8:30 (or 8:40 or whenever the coach ends it) home, bath, bed... it's way too late for school nights. Luckily, this only goes until the beginning of November. Games are 2 nights per week. I think practices will slow down now, but games start at 6 or at 8 pm. Yippy.
But, they are cute and claim they are having fun. Carl complains 75% of the time about being tired, hot and thirsty. I don't have any uniform pictures yet. (They are using the tee to help practice. the machine pitches at 43mph. Very few of the kids ever hit anything. We've been going to the batting cages a couple times per week to practice, too.)
So, that's what we've been up to most of our days. Add in Girl Scouts, upcoming Cub Scouts and homework are you can see why we are very busy. I will be happy when our schedule lightens up in November.
**update** last night they had their first game. I couldn't go because I had the first meeting of the season for my camera club to attend. Lew kept me updated with texts throughout the game. Gretchen got the very first hit of the game for both teams when she was up in the 2nd inning. She got to 1st, but they got her out when it was time for her to run to 2nd. The score was 0-0 in the bottom of the 4th. 1-1 in the 5th. Carl was playing left field and he actually fielded a ball! The coach had told him to run it in if he got it and he did just what he was told to do! He clearly gets his mad baseball skillz from his mother. Guess he doesn't have any Livingston genes in him. You oughta see him throw that ball! Glad the coach told him to run. I asked Lew if we won and he said, "I don't think so. I think it was 1-2." I asked how long the game was and he said "Maybe 6 innings. I think they just played until we hit 90 minutes and then it is over." Either he was too busy with his phone and sending texts or the game was vague. Our next game is not until Wednesday. I'll get to see that one and let you know how our team does.

On Sunday we were invited to a friend's birthday party at Chuck E Cheese's. You know - parents hate the place, kids love it. Honestly, we have only been one other time. But, they have been asking to go back, so when K invited us to her 6th birthday party there, they were thrilled. I actually think it was pretty quiet in there. It was 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. They kids did have a blast, but it was kind of a odd party atmosphere. They got to see a few old friends from pre-school which was fun and we love little K and her family, but the kids didn't really interact. Gretchen and Lew went in one direction and Carl and I in another. They didn't really play with any friends. But, I did see all the kids enjoying themselves. So, in that respect, I guess it was a fun party.
So, the September family photo...... they have a little game where you can sit and have a photo drawn. It snaps your picture quickly and then turns it into a little sketch that spits out when it is finished printing. We somehow managed to squeeze all 4 faces into this little seating area. And, viola - September photo of all 4 of us is covered!
Here are a few other shots of the kids having fun. Carl loves these rides - he doesn't realize that he looks like a 10 year old. He doesn't care what people think anyway. He had a lot of fun. We'll probably be going back sooner rather than later. I'm sure Gretchen will pull out her famous, "We won't be this little for long" line. I just love it when she repeats my words back to me.
When we got home, Lew pulled out some old tokens he had in his desk. Our friend Chris used to work at CEC in high school and college. These tokens are dated 1982 - 1984. Pack rat vs large stuffed mouse.

This is from NY on vacation. We stopped at the Freihofer's outlet to buy cookies and doughnuts and more. But, the fact that the sign had both Freihofer's and Subway made it the perfect vacation theme photo for us. Carl loves Subway and he ate at various locations several times on vacation... and if you knew how many Freihofer's Soft Doughnuts I downed during the 3 weeks we were in NY.... well, let's just say you would be impressed to know I only gained 3 lbs over those 3 weeks. Damn. Now I want one. We can't get Freihofer's in NC. Plus, I have lost that 3lbs and more.... better not tempt fate.

This is from NY on vacation. We stopped at the Freihofer's outlet to buy cookies and doughnuts and more. But, the fact that the sign had both Freihofer's and Subway made it the perfect vacation theme photo for us. Carl loves Subway and he ate at various locations several times on vacation... and if you knew how many Freihofer's Soft Doughnuts I downed during the 3 weeks we were in NY.... well, let's just say you would be impressed to know I only gained 3 lbs over those 3 weeks. Damn. Now I want one. We can't get Freihofer's in NC. Plus, I have lost that 3lbs and more.... better not tempt fate.
