festive food fun

The kids got to do some baking and decorating with candy over the holidays...

The first project was baking spritz cookies (if you don't know - those are the kind you make with a cookie press) at Grandma's. These are Daddy's favorite cookies, but he only got 6 cookies from this day's batch. See, Gretchen decided she wanted to give her cookies to all her cousins and Grandma was kind enough to help her package them all up in pretty little bags for people other than Daddy! Fear not! Gretchen was willing to try again - and luckily, Grandma was happy to help her. They made another batch the following morning - just for Daddy!

Then, she and I made a batch here yesterday for Lew. The whole time we made them, we said, "These are for Daddy." So, today when she caught me eating one she was shocked. "What did you just put in your mouth?" I told her she could have one. More shock. "You mean we can eat them too? I thought they were all for Daddy." Imagine her excitement when I said he couldn't eat a whole batch by himself!! And she happily had 2 purple ones with pink sprinkles.

Here are the pictures from Grandma's. Lew said Carl did make one cookie. One. And he claimed he caught it on film. That must have been with Grandma's camera.
The other food craft for the week was a gingerbread house kit. Claire has taken cake decorating classes and really likes that kind of stuff - so she was the perfect guide for the project. I was pretty surprised that Carl did as much as he did. He was really into placing gumdrops on the roof. Especially yellow ones! Yellow is his favorite color. He loves to ask people what their favorite color is. Then, he'll tell you Mommy's is orange, Daddy's is purple, Gretchen's is red and his is yellow. Gretchen's favorite part of the gingerbread house building was sampling the building materials. Grammie bought extra candies, so there was plenty to sample. But, I will say, the Hannaford Spice Gumdrops were not good. They seemed kind of musty and red was not cinnamon. This wasn't an issue for the 5 year old girl. She isn't old enough to have colors match flavors in her mind. Because, the red ones tasted like wintergreen to me. You know, wintergreen is supposed to be a pink circle candy about 1/2" thick.
