a day with Grandma

We traveled to NY on Wednesday December 21st.  We made good time (for a 700+ mile trip) and had warm winter weather to travel in the whole trip.  We did hit fog in PA, but it wasn't that long.  It was pretty blinding, though.  The exit signs literally blended into view as you were passing them.  It was as thick as the pea soup Claire wanted to make with the leftover ham bone from Christmas dinner.

Carl was sure we were going to Grandma's on Thursday.  "We always go to Grandma's on Thursdays."  OK.  With stuff like that - if one of the kids tells me something like that, I believe them.  I forget.  They never will.  So, no problem.  The next day, we made plans to head to Grandma's.

The kids got to play before lunch.  We broke with tradition and lit the menorah at lunch time.  No one was hit by any lightning.
Since the first off time lighting was a success, Gretchen asked if Grandma could show her how this menorah worked, too.
Downstairs, Grandma had set aside a guitar for the kids to bring home.  They played several tunes for us right then and there.  Gretchen did some accompanying on the piano as well.
We got to see Grandma several other times throughout the week as well.   The next day, Lew and the kids went over by themselves to play and bake cookies.  Lew wouldn't take the camera, so there are no photos of that event.  I understand Carl made 1 cookie.  Gretchen was much more into it.  She was worried before this because last year she couldn't work the spritz cookie press by herself and she remembered that.  She thought it wasn't going to be fun to bake if she couldn't work the press.  But, turns out, a full year increased her strength just enough!  With the bakers gone, this gave me the opportunity to do some wrapping, some baking of my own and some photo editing while my mother was at work that day.  I got to spend a very much needed productive day alone with Michael Buble right before Christmas.

And yes, Carl was correct.... the following Thursday was another chance to go to Grandma's.
