another turtle visitor

We apparently have a cool lawn according to our local box turtles. Today we found another one on the lawn by our deck. So, they are coming up out of the pond and getting in somehow, but I still worry that they would get turned aorund and not find their way back towards the pond. Plus, the fence has a lower lip that might give them trouble leaving. So, once again, we grabbed a camera and a bucket and headed out back to play Turtle Heroes!

Turns out, I am getting better with wildlife in my yard because I picked him right up this time. But, Gretchen is not warming up to these critters. She refused to touch or hold him, but was very happy to watch him head back into the pond and go back to his mommy! She also enjoyed hurling bites of bread at him. He didn't eat any. We do feed the turtles in the pond, so I know they will eat soggy bread, but I'm sure this guy was a bit too nervous to snack along with Gretchen. Carl didn't offer to share any of his slice of bread. Tradition with him.

He did hold the turtle though! And both kids said 'good-bye' to him before we set him down on the shore. He had sort of a boo boo on his back - the shell was broken off by his tail. Next time I pick one up, I will have to see if it is this same persistant guy back on the lawn.

why wait Wednesday

Why wait for Mommy to get out of the shower? Just get your own breakfast!!

Usually, Lew is still home when I am getting ready. Today he left for work while I was in the shower. Guess that isn't going to work out so well.

where'd X go?

Lew was giving the kids breakfast this morning while I was getting ready. One of the elements of today's Daddy Breakfast happened to be Alphabits. Lew said after a few minutes, Carl asked, "Where'd "X" go?" he said Carl asked him several times before Lew looked over at Carl's placemat to see he had already pulled out

"B" "O"

He also said he had "P" "O" and then asked "Where'd "P" go?" He loves to spell p-o-p because he loves popcorn! He really could survive on 3 items in life: chicken nuggets, pumpkin muffins and popcorn!

another spelling story:
The other day Gretchen was using a magnet toy that has stencils that spell 3 letter words. You find the magnets and place them in the stencil's outlines. She had D-O-G's stencil (you know, Angela, I am much more nervous about grammar and punctuation now that you are reading this! Not really enough to double check everything, just enough to be aware of it!) and she was asking Carl for the letter "E". He said, "D." and she insisted she needed an "E" to spell dog. I'm not really sure why she was so set on getting an "E", she knew the stencil was asking for d-o-g, but when she gets something in her head, good luck getting her to change her mind. Apparently, Carl got sick of her asking for the wrong letter, because then I heard Carl make the sound that the letter "D" makes and tell her, "Duh duh. Dog. D-O-G. Dog."

He might not talk a lot, but when he does - he knows his business!

diving

You know what is really cute? A 3 yr old diving into the deep end. But - don't tell him that! Rather, tell him "No diving! No flipping, either! You are too little!" Flipping came after the diving.

Last week, there were 2 kids and their dad at the pool playing with us. The daughter, Stephanie was maybe 12 and the son, Steven was probably 10. They are the ones I mentioned in the "mini vacation" post's last paragraph. They were learning to dive, but you could tell the lessons had just started. Well, Steven and his father were at the pool again this morning (without Stephanie)and Carl & Gretchen couldn't have been happier! It was just us and them until about 11:30. It is so nice having the entire pool to yourselves, might I add! But, Carl remembered that last week, Steven was learning to dive so this week, Carl stood right next to him - bent over at the waist and actually pushed off with his legs and went into that pool head first. OK, kind of belly first. He kept his arms down by his side, though. He did this several times and some of them, he tucked his head under enough that he actually flipped over. We did try to coach him to put his arms up - and he did it. He is really close. But, then we remembered to discourage this behavior and talked him into the big tunnel slide.

Did I mention he likes to go down that on his belly, head first?

The kid is a fearless fish.

"F" is for Friday

OK, I really expected today to be a regular boring morning, so I had it planned in my head to do a Feline Friday and show a few pictures of Molly and Angus. But, when we woke up, it was raining and so, the indoor rainy day fun stuff began. And, Feline Friday may have to take a back burner to some other "F" words for the day.

"Finished"... the pumpkin muffins we made the other night. Once we finished breakfast, I asked if they wanted to make another batch. If you know us, you know we pretty much have 'punkin munkins' 7 days a week around here. Surprisingly, no one wanted to help me bake them. Some sort of Little Red Hen thing for the day. But, when I make them, I can have the batter mixed and into the muffin pans long before the oven gets up to temperature, so I welcomed the quick baking project. You oughta see Carl pour milk or oil into the mixing bowl! Another "F"... "full contact baking", but that didn't happen today.

"Forte" (read down this page to find it's definition here) ..... While those baked, we sang some songs and played guitar. Both kids are good singers and strummers. And they love jumping around and following song directions.

"Finger painting" ..... after the singing, we moved onto a good rainy day art project. I was really excited that Carl ran right over, asked for help getting his shirt off and climbed up into the chair. He picked his own color and even painted this by himself!
"Fish crackers" ..... while Gretchen & I were still painting, I heard rustling from the kitchen. I was only at the table, but couldn't see Carl, so I casually asked him, "What are you doing in there?" and he replied, even more casually, "Uh, just ... eating." He had helped himself to the bag on the counter and was into them!
But, that wasn't enough snack, I guess. Remember, these people had breakfast only 90 minutes prior... and lunch was only another 90 minutes away. But, next thing we know, he is coming out of the kitchen with a pumpkin muffin. Look at the "Fiendish Face of Fun" as he eats this hot - in more ways than one - muffin!

Gretchen & I couldn't do much about it... we were really "Finger painting" still at this point... but, believe me, she was "Finished" painting once she saw there was "Food" up for grabs!

Here's the tray after only 2 stolen. He ended up eating "Four" and giving one to Gretchen.... and if you quiz Gretchen, she will tell you that if you have "Four" muffins and someone gives you one more muffin, then you have "Five"!

But, let's not get too caught up in all this "Friday Frolicking"... and remember my original intent today.....

"Feline Friday!"

if you know cats, you know this pissed off look means they are content. Really.

Carl & Molly playing cars

Angus just loves Gretchen... and vice versa

This is how I found them after I got the twins down for nap. Angus has been sleeping in this laundry basket for days now, but Molly is just starting to get in on the comfy fun. Yes, the clothes were clean. Oh well.... guess that makes it a bit "Frustrating" to have extra laundry.

mini summer vacation - week 1

There is no pre-school right now. The kids have been on break since 8/7 and do not start school again until 9/1. So, this has been our first week of being back together 24/7. They are handling it very well! Maybe what I mean is I am handling it very well... and they are enjoying it!

Monday and Tuesday we had real temps of 98* and heat indices of 105+*. You can see how we handled that in the post from the other day. They loved having the wading pool to splash in and Gretchen really enjoyed the sprinkler, Carl got bored quickly. Now, my mother was worried.... you do not need to worry. Water does not flow from anything in NC right now at a cold temperature. That hose water was not cold!

We did try going to their favorite play place on Wednesday, but it wasn't a lot of fun for Gretchen & Mommy as a team. The kids wanted to play and do their own separate things, which is fine except I am only one person and the center has 3 rooms and a playground. Of course, Miss Art Lover's room of choice was 2 rooms away from Mr Train Table's choices. I hate going there and seeing the other mothers all chatting away or texting or talking on their phones and ignoring their kids. So, I must have looked worse! I wasn't even in the room with mine - which kind of breaks the policy, too. I'm a pretty big regular there, though, and the ladies who run the place know I play with my kids when we are there - they are just used to seeing me with Frick or Frack, not both at once. Anyway, since Carl has a tendency to plow over babies, I follow him a lot more closely. That left Gretchen playing independently a lot. She spent a good deal of time playing with the tool bench center thing. Hammers, wrench, screwdriver... I made the mistake of singing "If I Had A Hammer...." to her and then she wanted me to sing the Screwdriver song! And the Wrench song! The other parents must have loved me changing words and singing to her while they tried to have snack with their kids. Or maybe they didn't even notice I was interrupting their texting marathon.

The fun thing was just before we left, they brought out the big parachute. We have never been there for that! All the kids and Moms played and flipped it around. Then the kids got to stand on top of it, then under it, then they put balls on tops and we flipped them all over! And - even after all that - Mary said, "Now, everybody grab a ball and bring it over here for the bag!" and all the kiddos helped clean up! Yeah, even mine! (at home, it has gotten to the point where if we put out an album of them singing our 2 cleaning up songs, it would go platnum... but the toys would remain strewn on the floor.)

We've been having hand-me-down fashion shows in the mornings as we sort thorugh our drawers and closet and weed out things that are too small. Gretchen has been good at putting something on and saying, "This is too small. Let's give it to -----" or... "I want to keep this, Mommy!" Carl is going to be bugged when he realized hte purple polar bear jammies are gone! They were one of those one piece, fuzzy, footie things in size 3T and they barely fit him. But, he has been requesting them lately - so I keep saying they are dirty. Last night he picked something else. I think he has moved onto a new favorite. But, boxes of clothes are leaving the house! That makes me happy! We also have some friends here who are expecting a baby in November. They will take much of our leftover gear! And for that, I am super grateful!!!!!

Today is Thursday, Carl's therapist Ashlie came over today because he is not in school. We all love her and really look forward to having her in the house. Although, I always worry about the floors being clean enough. This summer, so far she has come over twice and both times she has been amazed at how much and how well Carl is talking. He just doesn't talk much at school. In his defense, his friends are a bit exciting, loud and even rowdy... so he doesn't really jump in and talk much. We're trying to figure out how to bridge this gap, though. But, until then, I am just happy that she sees what he is capable of. In September, the twins will graduate to the next classroom which will have more expectations. I am looking forward to seeing how Carl does with more structure. The class they are leaving was very age appropriate, but geared for 2 year olds. I hope the 3 year old room will present both kids with new challenges and lots of opportunity to grow.

So, there's our week so far. I don't have anything planned for tomorrow. That's kind of nice! Saturday, we'll be going swimming again! Carl can't wait!! He walks around the house with a bottle of sunscrenn (we are on our 3rd bottle this summer!) asking for "yotion" because if you have suntan lotion on then you can go to "my swimming"! But, since that last post, both kids have started really swimming! They both will swim across the deep end of the pool alone! I swim along next to them - but if I even attempt to help Gretchen, I hear, "I can do this myself, Mommy." Last Saturday, 2 older kids were there trying to learn how to dive. Carl would stand right there on the side with them - they would dive in (or belly flop in) and then Carl would jump right in after them. He was even trying to lean forward at one point. he wanted so badly to dive! Honestly, I think he would have been as good or better than those 2 were!
