bike riding
So, apparently, it is true. You don't forget how to ride a bike. In fact, you grow over the winter and then your bike fits even better and you take right off with no help at all! We did a couple days at the school track because it is nice and flat and you can see the entire 1/4 mile circle. But, we quickly progressed to going to a local park that has a 1/2 mile loop. They love it! A couple hills, a little bit of independence... bike riding has been a great weekend activity for us!

Ah yes - Bradford Pear season. It only lasts a few days.
They have all turned to green leaves since taking these pictures.

Molly & Angus are teenagers!!
Happy 13th Birthday to my first set of twins!!

Gretchen made this awesome card for them!
Instead of pumpkin muffins for Molly (since she had too many pancake muffins this morning) we got a can of turkey cat food and the baby food peas for Angus. Both cats loved the wet cat food. Angus is a bit miffed to learn that other cats actually eat this delicacy daily. Here is Molly after the party - still licking her lips!!!
Hmmm... cat nip toys. Cool!
He quickly headed to the couch for a nap, though. I managed to snap a picture before he fell asleep. Birthdays are hard work, huh, Angus?

Luna and me
I took the morning to go to the aquarium by myself to see Miss Luna in her new home. She has been at the aquarium for years in her own enclosure. She had water, but no friends - and she had her favorite heat lamp!
Well, now that she has gotten bigger, they have moved her out of her lonely enclosure and given her a new home with 3 friends! She now lives in a much deeper tank with 3 green alligators!
They monitored her entrance into this new area very closely and all 4 alligators are getting along swimmingly. In the wild, there could be a chance where an albino alligator would not be accepted by the others, but here, she is the biggest - and they 3 smaller green gators have taken to her just fine. The volunteers were telling me about her first days in her new digs. She actually had to learn how to swim! She showed off a little for me, too.
I have taken many pictures of her over the years, but never this close!
Here is an older shot I have of her. This was in a local museum's exhibit with my camera club recently.

Legos!!!!
After the big morning racing, we headed to Raleigh for an afternoon event we had been looking forward to for a long time! Lego Kids Fest!!!!!
If you saw the movie, then you know how this event was: Everything is Awesome!!!!!!
It was in the convention center and had just huge areas of building, sculptures, car tracks to race your creations, family challenges, different lines of Legos (Friends, City, Chima, monocolor, Lego Movie) with big building areas, an art gallery wall where you could add a square, a huge USA map where you could add a creation to your state, a chance to meet Emmett and Wyldstyle and even some shopping. We didn't get to do everything because there was just soooo much! They pretty much had to drag us out of there when our 4 hours were over!
Better share a couple of those shots as still photos.
Can't wait for next year! Hope they come to Raleigh again!!!

runners
The twins were in a marathon club at school again this year. The club meets for 25 weeks and ends in early March with a big race day. Each week, the kids gather after school to run or walk a mile together. This year, they added a 50 Mile Club and a 100 Mile Club for kids who are more ambitious. Turns out, when you factor in Disney, the days that we would take a walk at home, as well as the days at recess when the kids and their friends walk the track to catch up... both kids logged about 60 miles over the 25 weeks.
March 1st was the day of the big race. This is a big deal for the school. They hold a 5K, a 10K, a 1 Mile Race and then the 1 Mile Fun Run for the kids. The race started several years ago to honor a little boy that our school lost to cancer. His mother is a special needs aide in the school. I stood with her and a couple other school people as the first race began and together we cheered the runners on. I was volunteering with my camera as well. I was actually pretty proud of my images for the morning. A friend of mine from the camera club who lives on the race route helped me at the starting line, but then she headed home to capture runners as they passed her home. I wasn't able to capture all the runners finishing, but got a good deal of them before I had to head over to the field where the kids were warming up for the Fun Run!

The PE teacher ran the 5K race in that outfit because she is that cool! There was recognition and some prize (although i don't know what it was) for any child who beat her in the race! The Superintendent of Schools ran as well and there was a prize for any teacher who beat him. Carl's speech therapist beat him!

So, after the races, they had a sort of long awards process for the runners. The last thing was to award the kids their prizes. Chick-fil-A was there serving biscuits, bananas, coffee and water all morning. After the awards, we all grabbed a biscuit and headed out. We had to get home quickly to change our clothes and head up to Raleigh for....... Lego Kids Fest!!!! so, check for the next post about that!!!
